Man on horse in front of large mountain peak in Kyrgyzstan

Photography Workshops & Expeditions

Join me, Andrew Hertel, for immersive photography experiences that go beyond the frame, from the deserts of Death Valley to the remote peaks of Kyrgyzstan and the hidden coastlines of San Diego. My workshops are designed for photographers who want to deepen their craft, reconnect with nature, and find their own visual voice.

More Than Just a Workshop

Every workshop I lead is built around the idea that photography is as much about experience as it is about technique. Whether we’re walking across quiet dunes before sunrise, hiking into a mountain valley, or learning to read light along the coast, the focus is always on slowing down, connecting to the landscape, and creating from a place of intention.

While my fine art work is rooted in black and white, my workshops are open to photographers of all styles and experience levels. You’ll learn to see light, composition, and emotion in a new way, and leave with more than just great photographs.

We’ll chase light through mountain valleys and golden aspen forests, explore remote canyons, and immerse ourselves in the rhythm of the desert as it transforms for fall. My role in the field is focused on helping participants slow down, connect with the landscape, and find meaning in simplicity—turning each moment into a creative opportunity.

Yosemite Winter Workshop
Details Coming Soon
This winter workshop in Yosemite National Park is centered on slowing down and working deeply within a familiar landscape under uncommon conditions. Winter transforms Yosemite into a quieter, more introspective place—one where snowfall, fog, and shifting light simplify the scene and invite a different way of seeing. Rather than chasing iconic viewpoints, we’ll focus on personal interpretation, subtle compositions, and responding to what the park offers in the moment. Time in the field will be balanced with image review and post-processing, creating space to reflect on both the experience and the photographs that come from it. Full details will be shared as the workshop takes shape.

Stay in the Loop

New workshops are announced a few times a year and tend to fill quickly. Join my mailing list to be the first to hear about upcoming opportunities, early registration, and stories from the field.
