Images from Nature

Step into the landscape.

Black and white fine art nature photography by Andrew Hertel.

Explore The Art

I'm Andrew Hertel, a fine art nature photographer based in San Diego. I work exclusively in black and white — not to strip away color, but to get closer to the feeling of a place. The light, the texture, the stillness. The things you notice when you slow down and really look.

My work is black and white by choice, limited edition by design, and made for people who want more than a photograph on their wall.

Limited Edition Fine Art Prints

Most of my images are available as museum-quality prints, printed on fine art baryta paper and limited to editions of 100. Each print is made to last, with the tonal depth and detail that black and white demands.

These are prints made to live in a home. Not decoration, but a presence — something that changes the feeling of a room and rewards the people who spend time with it.

Prints are available as loose, matted, or framed. I also offer my Signature Mount — a traditional silver-halide print on genuine Ilford paper, developed through a chemical process that brings a depth and intimacy you simply can't get from digital printing.

White Silence

White Silence is my love letter to Hokkaido, Japan, a place I'd dreamed of visiting my entire life. Every image in this book was made in a single day, moving slowly through a winter landscape of snow and trees and absolute stillness.

I wasn't chasing anything. I was just there, paying attention.

The book collects over 40 black and white images from that day, printed on premium paper with a hardcover binding. Each copy comes with a signed print from the series, available exclusively to collectors of the book.

Photography Workshops & Guided Experiences

Workshops & Expeditions — Explore. Create. Connect.

My workshops are small by design, usually just three photographers at a time. Lodging is included, I handle the driving, and we go to places I know and genuinely love. The goal isn't just settings and technique, it's to slow down, get into remarkable landscapes, and make photographs that actually mean something. Whether you're picking up a camera for the first time or have been shooting for years, what matters is showing up curious and ready to explore.

If you've ever wanted to experience Death Valley, Yosemite, Joshua Tree, Southern Utah, or Kyrgyzstan with someone who can't wait to show it to you, I’d love to take you there.

Through fine art black and white photography, I aim to share more than just images. I offer a quiet invitation to slow down, look closer, and connect with the natural world.

My limited edition fine art prints and photography workshops are for anyone who feels drawn to the natural world — whether you want to hang it on your wall, or come experience it with me in the field.
