I usually focus on the beauty of nature in my images, rarely including man-made structures. However, when I first saw this section of the border wall between Tijuana, Mexico, and San Diego, I knew I needed to capture its stark presence. Living just two miles from this fence, I see it almost every day, and it evokes a complex mix of emotions in me.
Using a three-minute long exposure to smooth the ocean’s movement, I aimed to contrast its fluidity with the rigid lines of the fence. The day was misty, with an overcast sky that added to the somber atmosphere. In the far distant horizon, the Coronado islands are just barely visible through the mist, adding a subtle depth to the composition. A few birds perched atop the fence offer a hint of life amidst the scene's austerity.
This photograph is meant to evoke emotion, but I want the interpretation to be left to the viewer. The image, with its moody, contemplative feel, invites each person to find their own meaning within the scene.
I hope you enjoy this image as much as I did creating it.
