The Arch Within

In a slot canyon, every turn feels impossible.

You round one bend and think it can’t possibly get any better, then the canyon turns again and reveals something entirely new. The walls twist and fold into each other, shaped by millions of years of water and wind. Light slips through the narrow opening above, catching ridges and disappearing into shadow. Every few steps feels unreal in its own quiet way.

This image was created while leading my Utah Wild workshop in Southern Utah. We were making our way through a section of a remote slot canyon, wandering slowly and watching how the light changed from one minute to the next, when this scene stopped me.

What caught my attention wasn’t the scale of the canyon or the texture in the sandstone.

It was the arch.

Unexpected and almost hidden within the canyon itself, it felt like a moment of order inside all the movement. The light was reaching across the stone just enough to separate the shape from the surrounding shadow and reveal something that could have easily gone unnoticed.

Black and white brought me back to what made me stop in the first place: shape, contrast, and the way light can transform stone into something that feels almost unreal.

Printed using archival materials and crafted to last for generations, The Arch Within invites the viewer to slow down and wander a little longer.
