Created at Eureka Dunes in Death Valley National Park, Traces of Life No. 1 is a quiet study in contrast and presence. A single creosote bush glows in the last light of day, set against the cool shadow of a towering dune. The scene is divided almost perfectly in half—light and dark, presence and absence—echoing the visual harmony of a natural yin and yang.
At first glance, it’s a simple moment. But a closer look reveals something more: faint tracks from a kangaroo rat etched delicately into the sand. These tiny footprints, nearly invisible in the field, became a defining part of the composition once viewed on a larger screen. They speak to the resilience of life in even the harshest places.
This fine art photograph is part of my Traces of Life series—a growing body of work that celebrates the subtle beauty of the desert and the stories left behind by its inhabitants. Printed in black and white to emphasize shape, texture, and tonal contrast, each image is crafted with care and intention.
