Kyrgyzstan Photography & Cultural Tour
Kyrgyzstan is still largely unknown to most Western travelers, and the landscape reflects that; wild, unhurried, and almost entirely untouched. The mountains are vast, the valleys are remote, and the people who live there carry on a way of life that most of the world has never encountered. I went there as a photographer and came home thinking about it the way I think about very few places, as somewhere I needed to go back to, and somewhere I needed to share.
This trip is built around that. You'll photograph dramatic mountain landscapes, sleep under some of the darkest skies in Central Asia, and spend time with people whose traditions are genuinely rare to witness up close. Every logistical detail — transportation, accommodations, meals, permits — is handled by our experienced local team so that your energy stays where it belongs: on the light, the landscape, and the people in front of your lens.
I've been leading small-group photography workshops for years, and I put the same care into this trip that I put into everything I do. You'll have my full attention in the field, honest feedback on your work, and a guide who knows how to find the compositions that matter.
Why Kyrgyzstan
On my first trip, I didn't fully understand what I was getting into until I was on horseback making my way up toward Karakol Peak. There's a moment somewhere on that climb where the valley opens up below you and the scale of it hits you: the peaks, the sky, the silence. I remember thinking that people need to see this.
Sary-Jaz had a similar effect. It's a remote valley most travelers never reach, and when you're in it you understand why access matters. The light there, the quiet, the feeling that you're standing somewhere genuinely untouched stays with you.
But what surprised me most wasn't the landscape. It was the people. I photographed an eagle hunter on that first trip, through a language barrier with our guides translating, and watching the relationship between him and that bird was one of the most moving things I've witnessed as a photographer. Eagles of that size are extraordinary on their own. Watching one respond to a person it trusts, up close, in the mountains where that tradition was born, is not something you can replicate anywhere else. Only Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia still maintain eagle hunting as a living practice, and the number of licensed hunters in each country is small. We're fortunate to have access.
I came home from that trip knowing I wanted to go back, and knowing I wanted to bring a small group of people with me. That's what this trip is built around.

The Plan

You'll be met at Manas International Airport and transferred to your boutique hotel in the city. Once you're settled, we'll spend the afternoon exploring Bishkek on foot, taking in the markets, architecture, and street life before gathering for a welcome dinner together. It's a relaxed first evening, good food, good company, and a first taste of what Kyrgyzstan has to offer.

We leave the city behind and make our way up through mountain passes to Son Kol Lake, sitting at nearly 10,000 feet. It's a long but rewarding drive with plenty to photograph along the way. Our traditional yurt camp is waiting when we arrive, with comfortable beds, electricity, and hot showers. We'll shoot the sunset over the lake and spend the evening around the fire.

This morning we head toward Issyk Kul Lake, stopping along the way for a home-cooked lunch and a traditional yurt-making demonstration with a local family. It's one of the first real cultural encounters of the trip and worth taking your time with, both as an experience and photographically. By late afternoon we arrive at the Canyon of Forgotten Rivers, where the landscape shifts dramatically into deep reds and earth tones. Another yurt camp awaits with a warm meal and comfortable beds.

We start the morning photographing Mars Canyon, where the red rock formations and sculpted terrain make for some of the most striking landscape work of the trip. Later in the day we meet with an eagle hunter for a private session. Eagle hunting is still practiced in only a handful of places in the world, and the number of licensed hunters in Kyrgyzstan is small. Spending time with one of them, watching the bond between hunter and bird up close, is something that stays with you. We finish the day traveling by Soviet-era 4x4 toward Peak Eltcin, where camp and a hot meal will be waiting.

We'll be up early to photograph sunrise over the peaks before breaking camp and making our descent into Karakol. After a few nights in the tent camp, the boutique hotel feels like a welcome reset: hot showers, a comfortable bed, and reliable Wi-Fi to back up your images. We'll find a good spot for sunset in the evening before a relaxed dinner.

Today we trade the road for the saddle. A four-mile horseback journey takes us up into the alpine terrain below Karakol Peak, with our logistics crew handling all the gear and camp setup. It's a full day in the mountains with your camera, and one of the most memorable stretches of the entire trip.

We're up before dawn to photograph sunrise above the ridgelines, one of the cleaner light situations of the trip. After breakfast we make our descent back to Karakol, returning to the comfort of the boutique hotel for a hot shower and a good meal. A well-earned evening to rest, edit, and reflect on the last few days.

Sary-Jaz is one of the most remote valleys in Kyrgyzstan, tucked up against the Chinese border and rarely visited. We travel in by 4x4, moving through open steppe and along glacial rivers with peaks rising on all sides. Camp is set up and waiting when we arrive. The night skies out here are exceptional and worth staying up for.

After sunrise photography and breakfast in camp, we make our way back through the Karkara Valley, with time to stop and shoot along the route. Back in Karakol for our last night in the region, we'll gather for a celebratory dinner together.

We make the return journey to Bishkek for our final night together. The evening is set aside for a farewell dinner, sharing images and stories from the road. A good way to close out the trip.

After breakfast we say our goodbyes. You'll head home with a full card, a few new friendships, and a country that will likely stay with you for a long time.
Photography and Culture
Kyrgyzstan gives you a lot to work with photographically. The mountains are massive and the light at altitude can be extraordinary: long golden hours, dramatic cloud movement, and clear skies that turn deep and complex at night. We'll be out for sunrise and sunset at the locations that matter, and I'll be alongside you working through compositions, talking through the light, and helping you see what the scene has to offer.
But this trip is also genuinely about the culture, and that shapes the photography in ways that are hard to plan for in advance. When you're sitting across from an eagle hunter while his bird settles on his arm, you're not just thinking about exposure and focal length. You're trying to make an image that honors what you're witnessing. That's some of the most meaningful photography you can do, and it's the kind of situation where a little guidance, knowing when to wait, when to move, and how to stay present while still making pictures, goes a long way.
We'll also spend time with traditional crafts: yurt-making, felt work, and skills passed down through generations that are increasingly rare to encounter firsthand. These moments are slower and more intimate than the eagle sessions, and they produce a completely different kind of image.
By the end of the trip you'll have landscape work from some of the most remote terrain in Central Asia, and portraits and cultural photographs that most people simply never have the opportunity to make.
All experience levels are welcome. If you're newer to photography, I'd recommend getting comfortable with your camera's basic settings before the trip, but you don't need to be an expert to come home with meaningful work.

Yurt Camps:
Experience genuine Kyrgyz hospitality in traditional yurts equipped with electricity and comfortable bedding. These camps combine cultural immersion with convenience, shared restrooms and showers are available, and hearty meals are prepared on-site by our local hosts. It’s the perfect mix of tradition and comfort.
Tent Camps (Full Support):
On select nights, we’ll stay in scenic wilderness camps where our experienced crew handles all logistics, setting up tents, preparing fresh meals, and ensuring a warm, restful night under the stars. Each participant will be provided a sleeping pad and warm sleeping bag. While these camps don’t have formal shower facilities, the reward is unparalleled access to untouched landscapes and pristine night skies.

Astrophotography Bonus
This workshop is intentionally scheduled during the new moon, providing the darkest skies of the month. Our journey begins and ends in Bishkek, the capital city of Kyrgyzstan. The main international airport is Manas (FRU). Most travelers arrive via Istanbul (Turkish Airlines) or Dubai, both offering daily flights. Once you arrive, all ground transportation is provided for the duration of the trip.

July is one of the best times to experience Kyrgyzstan—expect long golden hours, mostly clear skies, and comfortable daytime temperatures. However, as with any high mountain region, conditions can change quickly. It’s not uncommon to experience sun, wind, rain, and even snow all in a single day. Nights at higher elevations can drop close to freezing. We’ll provide a detailed packing list to help you prepare for a range of conditions so you can stay comfortable, and keep shooting, no matter what the weather brings.

An average level of fitness is all that’s needed to enjoy this workshop. We’ll be doing some light hiking and walking on uneven terrain, but nothing strenuous. Our journey to Karakol Peak will be completed via horseback, offering everyone the opportunity to enjoy the high-altitude scenery comfortably. You should be able to carry your camera gear and walk a few miles each day. If you are prone to altitude sickness, please consult your physician and bring any necessary medication.

Pack breathable layers, a waterproof rain jacket and pants, and sturdy waterproof boots with merino wool socks. Absolutely. Many participants bring a partner or friend who simply wants to experience the adventure, landscapes, and culture without focusing on photography. Non-photographers are fully welcome to join all activities, enjoy the scenery, and immerse themselves in the journey. While photographic instruction is optional, they’ll still have access to all meals, transportation, and accommodations, and are encouraged to relax and enjoy the incredible locations we visit.

During tented overnights in remote areas, electricity is limited, so we recommend bringing a reliable power bank for camera batteries and essentials. We’ll be traveling through a mix of elevations, generally ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 feet (1,500–3,000 meters). While most people acclimate quickly, we build the itinerary gradually to allow your body to adjust comfortably. If you cancel 90 days or more from the workshop start date: full refund minus your non-refundable deposit.
If you cancel 31–89 days from the workshop start date: 50% refund of your total registration fee.
If you cancel 30 days or less from the workshop start date: no refund.
No exceptions to this policy. To protect yourself, I strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance.
I understand that life happens but unfortunately there are NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS POLICY, even for medical emergencies. All cancellation requests must be made via E-mail. I encourage participants to purchase refundable airline tickets and trip cancellation insurance. I strongly recommend trip insurance to protect you in the event of an unexpected situation that prevents you from attending the workshop. There are many different trip and travel insurance companies, I highly recommend you speak to an agent to ensure your trip is covered.
I reserve the right to cancel any workshop in the unlikely event the minimum participant enrollment is not met. In the event I cancel a workshop, participants will be given the option to reschedule to a later date. I am not, however, liable for expenses incurred such as airfare or accommodations, and for this reason I also recommend the purchase of trip insurance.

By registering for this workshop, you agree to the following terms and conditions:

A non-refundable deposit is required to secure your spot. The remaining balance must be paid no later than 90 days prior to the workshop start date. Failure to complete payment may result in the forfeiture of your spot.
2. Cancellations and Refunds:
If you cancel 90 days or more from the workshop start date, you will receive a full refund minus your deposit. If you cancel 30–89 days from the workshop start date, 50% of your registration fee will be refunded. No refunds will be given for cancellations 29 days or less from the start date. No exceptions to this policy. To protect yourself, consider purchasing travel insurance.
3. Travel Insurance:
Participants are required to purchase travel insurance to cover unforeseen circumstances such as cancellations, medical emergencies, or travel delays.
4. Physical Requirements:
This trip requires moderate physical fitness. Participants must be capable of hiking up to a few miles over uneven mountain terrain and spending a full day on horseback. High altitude is a factor on several days of the itinerary. Please consult your physician if you have any concerns about your ability to meet these requirements.
5. Weather Considerations:
While every effort is made to plan for ideal weather conditions, participants should be prepared for all types of weather, including hot, cold, rain, or snow. What some may consider "bad" weather often provides excellent photographic opportunities.
6. Liability and Safety:
By attending, you acknowledge that outdoor activities involve inherent risks. The organizer assumes no liability for injuries, illnesses, accidents, or loss/damage to personal property during the workshop.
7. Permits and Compliance:
This workshop is conducted with the necessary permits from the National Park Service and complies with all applicable regulations. The organizer carries liability insurance for added protection.
8. Code of Conduct:
Participants are expected to act respectfully toward others, including fellow attendees, the instructor, and the environment. Failure to adhere to this code of conduct may result in removal from the workshop without a refund.
