Discover Kyrgyzstan: A Photographers Paradise
Nestled in the heart of Central Asia between China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan is a hidden gem few travelers have experienced. With over 90% of its land covered by mountains, it’s often called the “Switzerland of Central Asia.” In 2024, National Geographic named it one of the world’s top emerging travel destinations for its untouched landscapes, genuine hospitality, and cultural authenticity. It’s a place where ancient Silk Road traditions live on, and where nature still feels wild and unspoiled.
Step into a world few have seen—where snow-capped peaks rise above vast alpine valleys, and timeless nomadic traditions continue beneath endless skies. Join award winning professional photographer Andrew Hertel and a team of expert local guides for a photography workshop that blends adventure, cultural immersion, and refined comfort in the heart of this remarkable country.
Developed in exclusive partnership with Visit Karakol, our trusted in-country logistics team, this journey combines their deep local expertise with Andrew’s creative vision. Together, we’ve crafted an itinerary not available through any other operator, designed specifically for photographers seeking comfort, authenticity, and adventure.
You’ll travel through Kyrgyzstan’s breathtaking Tien Shan Mountains, across high passes and through meadows dotted with wildflowers, but without the burden of logistics. Our experienced crew handles every detail—from setting up your private tented camps to preparing warm, nourishing meals, so you can focus fully on the craft of seeing and creating.
Enjoy evenings in traditional yurt camps, where the hospitality is as rich as the landscapes. Sleep soundly in cozy, well-appointed accommodations, whether it’s a boutique hotel in Karakol or a fully serviced tent beneath the stars. At every stop, you’ll find comfort thoughtfully woven into the wild.
This is not a trip about roughing it, it’s about experiencing remote beauty without compromise. You’ll explore dramatic canyons, glacial rivers, and alpine lakes, meet Kyrgyz families who still live by the rhythm of the land, and witness the timeless bond between eagle hunters and their magnificent birds. Every moment is designed to inspire and rejuvenate, both creatively and personally.

July is one of the best times to experience Kyrgyzstan—expect long golden hours, mostly clear skies, and comfortable daytime temperatures. However, as with any high mountain region, conditions can change quickly. It’s not uncommon to experience sun, wind, rain, and even snow all in a single day. Nights at higher elevations can drop close to freezing. We’ll provide a detailed packing list to help you prepare for a range of conditions so you can stay comfortable, and keep shooting, no matter what the weather brings.
-
An average level of fitness is all that’s needed to enjoy this workshop. We’ll be doing some light hiking and walking on uneven terrain, but nothing strenuous. Our journey to Karakol Peak will be completed via horseback, offering everyone the opportunity to enjoy the high-altitude scenery comfortably. You should be able to carry your camera gear and walk a few miles each day. If you are prone to altitude sickness, please consult your physician and bring any necessary medication.
-
A detailed packing list will be provided after registration. Expect a range of conditions—from warm days to chilly nights in the mountains. Pack breathable layers, a waterproof rain jacket and pants, and sturdy waterproof boots with merino wool socks. Bring comfortable clothing for hotel days and city exploration, and don’t forget your sense of adventure.
-
Yes! The remote regions we visit are ideal for drone photography. Please avoid flying in cities, near airports, or around people and private homes. Before traveling, familiarize yourself with Kyrgyz drone laws and your airline’s policies on transporting drones.
-
You’ll eat well on this trip. Hotel and restaurant meals offer a mix of local and international cuisine. In the mountains, our chef prepares fresh, hearty meals featuring local ingredients. Expect soups, salads, and satisfying main courses for dinner; eggs, bread, and fruit for breakfast. Vegetarian options are available—please notify us in advance. Coffee and tea are plentiful throughout the trip.
-
Absolutely. Many participants bring a partner or friend who simply wants to experience the adventure, landscapes, and culture without focusing on photography. Non-photographers are fully welcome to join all activities, enjoy the scenery, and immerse themselves in the journey. While photographic instruction is optional, they’ll still have access to all meals, transportation, and accommodations, and are encouraged to relax and enjoy the incredible locations we visit.
-
Yes, but access varies depending on location. In our hotels and yurt camps, you’ll have daily access to power for charging cameras, phones, and other devices. During tented overnights in remote areas, electricity is limited, so we recommend bringing a reliable power bank for camera batteries and essentials. Prior to departure, we’ll provide detailed guidance to help you prepare and ensure your gear stays ready throughout the journey.
-
This workshop is limited to just six participants, ensuring personalized instruction and a relaxed, small-group experience. You’ll have ample one-on-one time with Andrew and a supportive, collaborative environment for creating your best work.
-
We’ll be traveling through a mix of elevations, generally ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 feet (1,500–3,000 meters). While most people acclimate quickly, we build the itinerary gradually to allow your body to adjust comfortably. If you have known sensitivities to altitude, please consult your physician before the trip.
-
Yes, we strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers trip cancellation, medical emergencies, and equipment. It’s a small investment that provides peace of mind when traveling to remote areas.
-
After registration, you’ll receive a detailed pre-trip guide covering everything from gear recommendations to travel tips, packing lists, and cultural notes. You’ll know exactly what to expect and how to prepare for the best possible experience.
If you have additional questions, feel free to reach out directly. I’m happy to discuss details and help you prepare for this once-in-a-lifetime journey through Kyrgyzstan’s wild and welcoming landscapes.
